On the nights of 16/17th of April 1916 the Isle of Wight Rifles supported by two tanks advanced against the Turks at Gaza. One of these supporting tanks named "War Baby" received a direct hit close to the enemy lines and burst in to flames. Isle of Wight Rifleman Bill Mowbray dashed into the flames and dragged out what was left of the crew. For his heroism he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
